Insights 8
- Do not compare R² across test sets with different target variance
- Treat a negative test R² as a signal of shift or broken features, not as a rounding curiosity
- Pick MAE or RMSE from whether the decision needs the median or the mean
- Leave regression outputs linear and choose the loss for the statistic you need
- When you log-transform a skewed target, correct the back-transformed predictions toward the mean
- Retire sMAPE from forecast reports because of its asymmetry and its failure at zero
- Say whether a point forecast targets the mean or the median, and score it consistently
- Split squared forecast error into bias and variance across origins before choosing a fix
Projects 12
- Booking-flow A/B test: should the one-page passenger form ship?
- Passenger no-show probabilities for overbooking and reconfirmation decisions
- Card-fraud alerts under a fixed review budget: ranking on day 1, tested on day 2
- Probability of default for a card portfolio: calibrated, monotone, explainable and audited
- Churn risk is not persuadability: targeting a retention budget and designing the test that measures it
- Caravan-policy propensity for a direct-mail campaign: many weak signals, one held-out shot
