Insights 7
- Count tied scores before you read precision at K or NDCG from a shallow model
- Guard tree-model inputs against values outside the training range, because predictions go flat instead of failing
- Summarise a precision-recall curve with average precision, not the trapezoidal area, when scores are coarse
- Skip feature scaling for tree ensembles and spend the effort on features that carry signal
- Log-transform skewed inputs for linear and distance models, not for trees
- Hand a boosted tree the ratio it cannot build cheaply, such as load factor or price per unit
- Detrend or difference the target before using tree models on trending series
Projects 4
- Predicting one-year diabetes progression with an honest error estimate: nested CV on 442 patients
- Probability of default for a card portfolio: calibrated, monotone, explainable and audited
- Churn risk is not persuadability: targeting a retention budget and designing the test that measures it
- Caravan-policy propensity for a direct-mail campaign: many weak signals, one held-out shot
