Summary: situation, action, reason, boundary
Situation
A claims-intake text classifier will auto-route confident predictions and send uncertain ones to human agents.
Action
Use the maximum softmax probability as a baseline score, then measure on held-out data the error rate above each threshold and the share routed to humans. Choose the threshold from staffing and error costs, and monitor both after launch.
Reason
Correct predictions tend to have higher maximum softmax probability than misclassified or out-of-distribution inputs, which makes it a simple baseline that better methods can surpass.
Boundary
Human-in-the-loop classification, triage and auto-approval flows.
Symptom or risk
If the confidence score does not separate correct from incorrect predictions, the auto-route lane carries the same error rate as the rest, and out-of-domain messages may still get high scores.
Exceptions
Highly regulated decisions may need all cases reviewed regardless of confidence.
Trade-offs
Higher thresholds improve automated precision but raise human workload.
Pitfalls
Setting the threshold on training data, or never re-checking it after a distribution shift.

Claims and their sources
Hendrycks and Gimpel show correctly classified examples tend to have higher maximum softmax probabilities than misclassified and out-of-distribution examples, and that this baseline can be surpassed.
Guo et al. show modern neural networks are often overconfident.
