Summary: situation, action, reason, boundary

  1. Situation

You start error analysis on a classifier with thousands of misclassifications.

  2. Action

Sort errors by confidence (highest predicted probability for the wrong class), read 30-50 cases, and tag each as label error, missing feature, data bug or genuinely hard case.

  3. Reason

Confident mistakes are where the model's view of the world disagrees most with the label, which is where systematic problems surface.

  4. Boundary

Classification debugging, label-quality audits and new-data onboarding.

Symptom or risk

Random error samples are dominated by borderline cases that teach little; label errors and leakage-like bugs stay hidden.

Exceptions

For calibration issues, examine reliability by bin rather than individual errors.

Trade-offs

Manual review is slow but often finds the highest-value fix; automated label-noise tools need validation themselves.

Pitfalls

Relabelling only the cases the model disagrees with, which biases labels toward the model.
