The brief
The synthetic airline flies IST-LHR twice a day (flights ZX114 and ZX115, 180 seats each). A simulated product manager
proposes a third daily frequency from next summer. Every person, opinion and cost below is simulated or
hypothetical; the flight data comes from the course database (flight_day, 2022-2024).
- Product manager: wants a launch-date and a headline.
- Revenue-management analyst: owns the demand data and the booking limit.
- Data engineer: knows how
bookings_finalis produced. - Finance partner: approves a business case at a hypothetical 8,500 EUR variable cost per departure.
- Executive sponsor: decides.
What the database shows for IST-LHR over 2022-2024 (2,192 flight-days): average load factor 81.6%; load factor of 0.95 or
more on 29.3% of flight-days (maximum 0.96); bookings_final never above 190, which is 1.056 times the seats, and equal
to 190 on 27.7% of flight-days (33.2% in 2024); average fare 220.83 EUR.
Stage 1 of 4
The product manager's slide says: "We are sold out on more than a quarter of London flights." The finance partner says: "Average load factor is 82%; where is the problem?" The revenue-management analyst adds that the booking system stops selling at 190 bookings per flight.
