Summary: situation, action, reason, boundary
Situation
You train an RNN on one long stream by carrying the hidden state across consecutive chunks.
Action
Detach (repackage) the hidden state each chunk, set the chunk length at least as long as the longest dependency you need, and check it on a synthetic task with a known lag.
Reason
PyTorch's word language model example repackages the hidden state each batch because otherwise backpropagation would reach back to the start of the dataset.
Boundary
Language models and sensor or demand streams with stateful RNNs.
Symptom or risk
Without detaching, the graph reaches back to the start and memory explodes; with detaching, gradients stop at the chunk edge, so dependencies longer than a chunk receive no learning signal.
Exceptions
Stateless training on independent windows.
Trade-offs
Longer chunks cost memory and time.
Pitfalls
Detaching only at epoch start; reading forward-state carryover as evidence that long dependencies were learned.
Lessons and concepts
Claims and their sources
The PyTorch word_language_model example detaches (repackages) the hidden state before each batch so that backpropagation does not extend back to the start of the dataset.
