Summary: situation, action, reason, boundary
Situation
You build a Transformer over ordered booking events or sentences from scratch, and its validation score is decent.
Action
Score the validation set with the order shuffled within each sequence and compare with a bag-of-events baseline; if shuffling changes nothing, confirm the position encoding is added and either the task ignores order or the code is wrong.
Reason
Vaswani et al. add positional encodings because the model has no recurrence or convolution, and Hugging Face's glossary says transformers are unaware of token position without position ids.
Boundary
Custom Transformer encoders for events, sessions and text.
Symptom or risk
Self-attention alone has no sense of order; if position information is missing or added wrongly the model is a bag of tokens that may still score well where order matters little, hiding the bug.
Exceptions
Tasks where order is irrelevant by design.
Trade-offs
One extra evaluation pass.
Pitfalls
Shuffling across sequences instead of within them; padding that moves with the tokens.
Lessons and concepts
Claims and their sources
Vaswani et al. inject positional encodings into the input embeddings because the model contains no recurrence or convolution.
Hugging Face's glossary states that transformers are unaware of the position of each token, so position ids identify each token's position.
