Trace and span

A trace is the record of one request across components; a span is one timed step in it, carrying attributes such as model, tokens, status and release id.

In detail

One trace per request holds spans for retrieval, reranking, each model call and each tool call, linked by a trace id. OpenTelemetry's GenAI conventions name attributes for model, token counts and finish reason; they are marked Development, and content attributes are opt-in because prompts and answers may contain personal data.
