Deterministic workflow
A fixed sequence of steps defined in code, in which a language model may be called at particular steps but never decides the order of the steps.
In detail
Workflows are cheaper, easier to test and easier to audit than agent loops because the control flow is known. They fail where no branch was written for the case. A common hybrid is a workflow whose exception path is a bounded agentic step with its own budget and allow-list.
